Tax Tips for Forest Landowners 2023

— Posted, January 7, 2024 —

As a private forest landowner, you may start to think about timber-related federal income taxes only after having a timber sale. However, each forest activity you conduct can have tax implications. Generally, all income received is taxable unless excluded by tax law, and nothing is deductible unless a provision allows it. Understanding the forest-related provisions and integrating tax planning into your forest management can help lower your tax. This publication is intended to be an informational and educational resource for you and your tax advisor, but is not intended as financial, tax, or legal advice. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning your particular tax situation. The information is current as of December 15th, 2023.

New Extension Report: W 1216 Economic Impact of Tennessee Forest Product Exports in 2022

— Posted, December 15, 2023 —

Report Summary: Tennessee’s forestry industry is globally connected, and many sawmills in the state are dependent on global sales. About half of the higher-grade hardwood lumber produced in Tennessee is exported (Luppold et al., 2018). Consequently, changes in global markets can have a significant impact on Tennessee’s forest economy. In this report, we discuss the economic impact of Tennessee’s forestry exports. We examine the export changes in 2022 (relative to 2021) across destination countries (e.g., China, European Union) and by product (e.g., oak lumber, hardwood logs, barrels), and further assess the full economic impact of export sales on income and jobs at the state level. Overall, the results of this report show that 2022 export sales ($193.7 million) resulted in an estimated total economic impact of $359 million and 1,692 jobs statewide. Note that the results of this study do not include activities that facilitate export sales, such as transportation from sawmills to the port.

TN Mills & Forest Products 2019

-Updated 3/9/2021-

The Tennessee’s Mills and Forest Products, 2019 dashboard is now live and publicly available.

USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program issues a Timber Products Output (TPO) survey to a sample of mills equivalent to 40% of all mills for each State. The TPO survey provides insight into patterns of mill production and industry health, utilization of forest resources, and the economic impact of forest industry on state and local economies. Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry developed an addendum survey to address industry and business development needs specific to Tennessee. The addendum survey was completed alongside the USDA Forest Service TPO survey. The results of the inaugural addendum survey are presented in this dashboard.
